The League of Gentlemen, comprising of writer/performer's Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith and writer Jeremy Dyson, started life on the London Fringe with a sketch−show first performed at the Cockpit Theatre in 1995. They then secured a weekly residency at the Canal Café Theatre, which led to their first visit to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1996. Here they were quickly signed up by the BBC to record a radio series with a view to future TV work.
They returned to Edinburgh with a new show in 1997, scooping the Perrier Award for Comedy.
Their Radio 4 series, On The Town With The League of Gentlemen aired in 1997, winning the Sony Silver Award and subsequently a Talkie Award for 'Best Audio Comedy'.
The League's first television series, simply called The League of Gentlemen was filmed in 1998 and transmitted on BBC2 in January 1999. The programme went on to win a BAFTA for 'Best Comedy' in May 2000, as well as the prestigious Golden Rose of Montreaux and the RTS Award for 'Best Entertainment' 1999.
The second series of The League of Gentlemen aired in January 2000 and won the NME award for 'Best Television Programme' in February 2001.
The League of Gentlemen Christmas Special, a 50 minute one off with a horror/Christmas theme was aired in December 2000 and A Local Book For Local People, published by Fourth Estate was released in October 2000.
After a sell out UK tour in October−December 2000 which included venues such as The Liverpool Empire, Manchester Apollo and Birmingham NIA, they then went on to perform A Local Show For Local People at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane for a run of six weeks from 12th March 2003.
The third series of The League of Gentlemen aired in September 2002 and won the South Bank Show Award for Best Comedy in 2003.
The League Of Gentlemen's Apocolypse The Feature Film by The League of Gentlemen was released in 2005 and the DVD of The League of Gentlemen Are Behind You (their live panto) was released inDecember 2006.
